Where I stayed
That was our last city as we drove up towards Canada. The rest of the towns you'd pass right by if ya blinked! We had our eyes on the look out for the Forks. We read there was a high waterfall and some river rafting in the area. We pulled over at the Northern Outdoors which was a lodge, rafting company and brewery. We sampled what they had left in stock and got directions to Moxie Falls. The environment wasn't real friendly at NO and Steve got a bad vibe so we decided to go with another company for the rafting trip
We did a quick hike to Moxie Falls, which is around 90 ft high, higher then Niagara but not nearly as wide. A family was swimming around the upper falls and that just freaks me out...any current and they'd go right over! We noticed a tent just off to the side so someone was camping. I thought there was too much foot traffic to camp there but it'd be awfully lonely at night.
On our way out, we scoped a few rafting companies and decided to go with Crab Apple. We still didn't have a place to sleep so we were looking for a good site. We pulled over at a park across the street and watched people jump off a bridge, into what looked like a shallow river. Kra-Cra! Having remembered the person camping by the falls, we decided to sleep in the dirt lot near the falls.
The next day we were herded on a bus and heading down the Kennebec River. It was my 1st time rafting and it was awesome! I had my feet dug in and was praying that I wasn't going to get tossed. They release water from a dam daily, which creates up to Class V rapids. The upper section had the best rapids. A few times we were able to get out of the rafts and float down some mild rapids but you had better time your breathing! The lower section was slow but we had great weather so it wasn't too bad. We went back for a steak lunch (it wasn't delicious but filled out tummies, which by then we were starving), jumped into the jacuzzi and swimming pool, then watched a slide show of our day. By then, people were going back to their rooms or driving home in their vehicles. Not us, we took nice, hot showers then headed back on the road.
