Yes it was going to be bishops but the hero of Levoca (thats Le-voctch-ah) is a carpenter who was working a mere 500 yeasr ago. Master Pavel of Levoca is the man round these here parts. Across a very sunny town square lies St. James church which contains his meisterwerk - an alter 18.63 meters tall traced out of wood but mostly air. I think we can safely say he passed his woodwork GCSE. Levoca itself is lovely little place ideally placed for explorations - this plus the fact that Ive chanced upon one of those pensions that put a smile on your face and keep it there mean that this is as far as I go this trip. In the last week Ive investigated one of the largest castles in the world at Spisska Podhradie just oustside the town, taken the funiculee-funicular train up above the snowline in the Tatra mountains that loom over this part of the world and on the other side of which is Poland - a destination for a future I hope and trekked back back down footsore and openmouthed and wandered in silence the wonderful Slovensky Raj (Slovak Paradise) national park which is not badly named, investigated churches and museums and generally kicked back - sometimes by design and sometimes not (Easter round here is taken very VERY seriously) Tomorrow I travel back to Trnava. Have to love the place names round here - theres all the kind of scrabble hand that you really really dont want and from there its Bratislava and home and time to dream of the next trip.... Toodles
