What started as a night or two in Melacca has turned into five. After an abyssmal first night here (one week's budget spent on one night's accomodation in an over-priced hotel)we managed to find a great little guest house near the river with an owner ("Al") who has told us where to go, so to speak, since the moment we walked in the door.
We've got two air-conditioned rooms, laundry for 3RM ($1) per kg., space in the pop fridge for our Kraft Philadephia cream cheese (alongside Tiger beer, Barry's new favourite) a great cafe down the road (that serves waffles and other Western white stuff such as French fries and toast), and the old town is across the bridge.
Judging by the the honking horns from cars passing by, we're quite a sight to see: six white people (with red hair, skateboards, and six feet in height) out in the midday sun looking somewhat lost, sweaty, and withered. People love the skateboards and have even asked the boys to perform tricks in the aisles of the supermarket.
Have seen some cool things:
Strange Art and Cultural centre in Singapore (looks like big bug eyes)
Causeway connecting Singapore and Malaysia (then elephants, windows in a ten-storey building filled with weird manequins, cockroaches, bugs, birds, and buses that should have been buried years ago)
We went on a river boat ride on our first day and saw monitor lizards, weird eel-like creatures slithering at the river's edge, ancient buildings, and unfortunately, many new ones that are taking the old ones' places.
Chinatown during New Years (decorated with red and gold lanterns, lion dances, night markets, cooking stalls, fireworks)
Smelled smells we've never smelled before (some that we hope we never smell again)
Experienced our first squat toilets (think Trainspotting)
Know there's lots more, but I'm getting sleepy.
Hope everyone's well. Love to all.
