We made it to Fiji with no problems but were super tired by the time that we got there. With layovers and everything, it was about 33 hours of travel time.

We flew from Edmonton to Calgary on a little dash 8 and then from Calgary to LA on a Airbus 320. That flight was great and had plenty of legroom and good service. LA was a bit of a disappointment as it was really smoggy and dirty. Watching the planes take off was not all that great as they took off and dissapeared into the smog. I figure that the visibility must have been about 2 miles or so at best. We did get to see that Hollywood sign, Dodger stadium and the Staples Centre where the LA Kings and Lakers play.

The international terminal (Tom Bradley) was not what I expected it to be. It was so dirty and grungy and yes, we were approached by a Hare Krishna who looked to be about 18 or so. We quickly found a more quiet area of the airport in which we could hide away and avoid the people as much as possible. After about 5 hours were able to finally check into our flight. This final flight was on a Boeing 747. It was kind of impressive to see a staircase the first moment you walk onto a plane, leading to the second level. We were stuck at the back of the plane but there was enough leg room so we were just fine. The food was good and the service was excellent. Air Pacific is really good.

Okay, so we got to Fiji. It was raining just a bit but we didn't care as it was hot. (It was also 5:30 am.) Anyhow, we found a travel agent who's name was Tiki. he set us up with our accommodation and transport out to the Yasawas. We made it out to the Yasawa Flyer with just a few moments to spare and settled into our seats. After about 1 hour, the wave action was getting to me and I made it to the lower deck where there was AC and enough room that I could lie down before I tossed my cookies. Anyhow, we made it to our Island of Tavawa and were pretty happy with where we had chosen to stay, a place called David's Place. The lagoon was just as you see it in the pictures, with crystal clear water and those various shades of emerald green a turquoise. It was gorgeous. We stayed in a little Bure that had mosquito netting and about 4 resident geckos to keep the mosquitos at bay and we were pretty happy. We stayed there for 4 nights, visited the blue lagoon (Yes the place where they filmed the movie with Brooke Shields) but the coral here was mostly dead. We did find some great coral on Tavawa where we frequently snorkeled and saw clown fish, eels, parrot fish, angel fish, a sea snake, giant clams etc. All in all it was awesome. We also got to experience a real Fijian Lovo and our first taste of Kava which had a good effect on me, as it made me feel a bit like I do after a good drink, but getting to that point was not pleasant, it tasted really bitter (the stuff we had was strong) and I did not like it at all but Fred seemed to enjoy it. All in all Tavawa island was picture perfect, we will update pictures when we find a compute with a USB we can access.
We then continued on to Waya Lailai island which I will write about next time.
