Claire Bear's Birthday!

Last year we were in Adelaide this year Barcaldine. We start the morning jumping on Claire’s bed then head outside for breaky and presents, slow morning getting ready as we only have an hour to drive to Longreach. After breakfast we start packing up while Bill starts modifying the trailer plug as the hire car as a 7 pin and the van has 12. He heads off in to town to buy a 12pin plug but no-one has one so re-wiring it is. All done plug it in….nothing hmmm guy next to us suggests plugging the car into his van to check if problem is the car, yep no power getting through the plug, I call the hire car company while Bill heads in to town to mechanic to see what he can do. The car company ring back and say they’ve contacted an auto elec who is coming around to have a look. Bill gets back in time, still not fixed and auto elec says hire company said if needed to re-wire car to a 12 pin plug, yep you got it stuck again, 2 hours that’s cool we’ll have a walk find somewhere for lunch then we can head off.

We aim for rose garden around the corner one block, its closed, so back to the highway, there’s a bar and grill opposite our caravan park but it’s not open for lunch, the manager comes out and we explain we’re just looking for somewhere for lunch for Claire’s B’day, no problem he says the chef’s here doing some painting he’ll whip something up for you!! There’s that country hospitality again. Turns out Helen and Malcolm are new managers and only been here for 3 days, we all sit and have a chat what a lovely couple, Helen insist the kids have a swim after lunch while we wait for the car. Lunch arrives prepared by our personal Chef dressed complete in his shorts, Hi-Vis top and thongs, now that’s an Aussie Chef. A simply magnificent meal then to surprise Claire, Helen has snuck into town to buy candles, you can’t have a birthday without a cake and candles she insists when I express she shouldn’t have. After what Claire has described as, pretty cool that someone opened their restaurant just for her. Claire and Liam take the chance for a swim and Bill chases up how the car’s going. Turns out the electric brake controller that had been fitted yesterday has an internal short and had we have hooked up would have caused our van brakes to lock on permanently, see a reason for everything, so now he’s after wiring in a 12 pin plug and replacing the brake controller you would think we’d be good to go? No still no power getting through! Then we discover the caravan plug has been damaged so our little happy camper auto elec heads back to the workshop for a soldering iron. Not quite sure what his problem is he is charging by the hour, but he sure does like to swear.

We’re off and racing, Longreach here we come, big goodbyes to some new friends and we hit the open road again. Lots of road-kill, heaps of kangaroos a couple of wild pigs and birds everywhere in their element. We arrive in Longreach around 5:30 quick un-hitch so Bill and Emma can head in to town to get Claire a B’day cake. We throw together enchiladas, Claire’s request, and Emma has surprised Claire with party hats and streamer poppers together with Ice-Cream cake, Birthday now complete and we finally made it to Longreach, let the fun begin!
