Big drive today. Claire has announced she doesn't want to drive on her Birthday (which is next Tuesday) so we are hoping to be somewhere civilised to stop for the day so we are planning maybe around Mt Gambier so the further we get the next couple of days the better. We leave Esperance (Bill driving) and have our first stop in Norseman it’s very overcast so nice to be heading to sun (we hope) we pass several road-works and an enormous truck with 2 pilots carting what looks like an over-sized harvester he takes up the whole road and pulls over every kilometre or so to let the build-up of cars pass him we also pass a crazy cyclist pedalling his little heart out.

Stopping in Norseman we head for the town centre as we missed it when we came through on our way to Kalgoorlie. Didn’t miss much last time, we stopped at the info centre as it was the only place open & got a feel of what the town must be like as everything was "locked down" with bars on the windows and doors. We fuel up at the BP roadhouse and head East back over the Nullarbor (me driving now). It will be interesting to see how the fuel consumption goes with a tailwind instead of a headwind and if we get different views of the Bight. We pass Fraser Range where we had stayed on the way over, next Belladonia roadhouse for loo, stretch & have a quick bite to eat. We meet a family from Sydney who have been over in Perth visiting family and are on their first big caravan trip, tough going with 3 little kids and every-time they stop they have to unload all the bikes to get in the van, Bill shows him how we have our “washing machine” set up (a 20 litre tub on the back of the van we load with detergent water & the clothes when we leave in the morning then rinse when we stop for the night) working very well I have to say. We head off, briefly stopping at Caiguna blowhole (couple of hundred km’s away) then fuel at Caiguna roadhouse and decide we can get further than Cocklebiddy, which is only another 65 kms and where we had planned on stopping the night. We’ve now clocked up 580 odd kms and we are travelling along really well, the kids all say “let’s push it” so we’re off. Laptops playing everything from Modern Family to Big Bang Theory, Bruno Mars & Birdy Liam’s new CD’s playing in between episodes. Cocklebiddy next is Madura we bypass all the lookouts as we had stopped on the way over so we save a bit of time we decide to head for Mundrabilla roadhouse where we had stayed 2 weeks ago one of three places we have ever stayed twice, the other two places being the Tootgarook foreshore at Xmas and Treasure Island on the Gold Coast, not bad considering how many caravan parks we’ve stayed in! anyway….it is now heading towards dusk we have a rule never, ever drive at dusk or dawn on open roads, higher risk of hitting skippy or his mate, eyes peeled on the road we keep going we find ourselves travelling behind a road-train a little more comforting there’s a lot of nothing out here and it gets dark really quickly! We arrive safe & sound at around 8pm having only seen a couple of roo’s and an emu with no kamikazes (thankfully) 815km but we made it, if we’d known we were heading that far we’d have left earlier than 8:30 this morning, all good here now and enjoying a home cooked meal, early to bed another big drive tomorrow and we lose time when we cross the border.

Mackay’s not meandering back to Melbourne
