Free from the van we can do some serious driving so we head out to Glen Helen Gorge in the West MacDonnell Ranges. The countryside is so different we could really have been anywhere in Australia. Green ground cover and the most Majestic Mountain Range as far as the eye can see. We drive for just over an hour (136km) & arrive at Glen Helen Resort!! Resort Ha one petrol pump & one building with some dirt if you want to camp. Imagine booking & thinking it was a resort! Anyway we take the short walk down to the Finke River & walk along the riverbed to where it flows through the gorge. Absolutely breathtaking! The kids spend some time practicing looking for tadpoles & skimming rocks across the water. We then head back stopping at "Ormiston Gorge" & walk down to the waterhole. You follow a dry sandy riverbed along the road which ends at the base of a cliff (complete with cave) the sand wraps around the waterhole & had it been warmer the most beautiful place to stop & take a dip! We sit & take it all in for a bit, even spying some rock wallabies up on the cliff face. Next stop “The Ochre Pits” this is a natural mineral & is the raw material used by the desert Aboriginal people for paintings & ceremonial body decoration. Our final stop on the way back to Alice is “Ellery Creek Bighole”. This is gorgeous a sandy beach with trees surrounding a beautiful swimming hole (although very cold water) the kids build sandcastles while we sit & enjoy the peaceful surrounds. Black clouds seem to be following us & as it was a dirt road we decide to head back into Alice. Great day of exploring now to plan tomorrow!! 'til then Mad Mackay Mob   xo
