Left Clare 9ish & headed to Port Augusta the landscape has definitely started to change drought has hit this area miles & miles of low scrub and redish dirt. We arrived in Port Augusta around midday and headed for the tourist centre which had Wadlata Outback Centre which is an interactive tour of S.A over the past million or so years!! After stocking up on supplies we headed for Woomera. This is where we really started to notice the difference in the landscape. Lots & lots of NOTHING straight road & low scrub with intermittent grids along the road stopping cattle from moving from one area to the next. We saw many animals cows, emus & sheep to name a few. We stopped at Pimba 6kms before Woomera for fuel (now 148.9 for diesel!!!) & came across what we thought was a caravan park but was actually just a parking bay next to the roadhouse where you could park for the night. There were heaps of vans already set up for the night, we had planned to go on to the next town and by-pass Woomera but as the sun was starting to drop we decided to play it save & headed into Woomera for the security of the Caravan Park with power & cleaner amenities. Once power hooked up & bikes unloaded we decided to take a walk/ride into Woomera!!! Oh my goodness it was like a ghost town of empty houses all very neat but no-one around. The odd car drove past but nothing else. Very neat streets but you got the feeling a lot was perhaps Govt housing or the like. One of the cars that passed us was a mini van with 4 policemen in it!! We found the outdoor museum of some old missiles & jets & thought best to head back to the caravan park even avoiding taking the long way back past the park. Very spooky feeling I have to say. Heading off early in the morning & no internet access so probably 2 postings tomorrow! Mackay Mob…..
