2011: what a long year. I rang it in the only way I knew how… with a bang, and definitely some new changes! Huge ones.

Freshly living in California, I somehow could not leave my past behind, and longed for Massachusetts, where I had spent the past 10 previous years of my life… so as I was supposed to be starting a fresh year in a fresh state, I found myself back in Boston at a moe. NYE throedown…. How very ironic considering my escape plan from MA.

Anyways, I am one of those people that if I am told that something can't be done, I will say "yeah okay, WATCH ME DO IT".  Some may call this stubborn, always wanting what I can’t have, and doing anything to get it. I find this false. I just see myself as a “go-getter” most of the time. Or in this here case… a hopeless romantic.

Long story short (I won’t kill you with this), I was in a long distance relationship with a guy from MA which I started AFTER I moved away to CA. (…….). I then thought, HEY! What an excellent idea it would be that you move out here with me. So on Dec 28th, 2010, I packed up all my belongings, flew to MA, helped him pack up all his belongings and vacate his house, and jumped in the car with him after new year, and started heading south into the middle of the night on I-95, with no itinerary and only knowing we had 5 whole weeks to do this. “Here goes nothing, yeeeee!”

Pretty much whipping our way through the states we didn’t really care to see so much, or the ones the smelled (Jersey and NY- no offense!), we managed to make it down to Myrtle Beach, SC in less than 24 hours. Even with a quick disco nap in a NJ parking lot, and a self made tour of Washington DC, we still made record timing…. Then of course pounded for “forbidden fourlokos” when we got to my friends house, and man that was a crazy night. Try driving more than half way down the whole east coast then pounding 4 fourlokos and tell me you can walk a straight line, let alone knowing what your name is. Dayymmn..

Waking up the next day was… like a.. “what? Where the FUCK are we?” situation which struck us. We snuck out quietly from my friend Tom’s house, and went to a local “Waffle House”, which were everywhere, like DUI check points in Capitola, CA.

We decided to stay the night in Myrtle Beach, getting one of the kick ass beach front suites they had to offer at one of the overdone hotels for only $39!!! It was so cheap because it was off-season, and did a lot of bargaining… but man.. WHAT A PRICE!! That night we even ended up having a hotel party with old friends that I use to work with in New Hampshire, that we met up with at the bar…. and more random people. Let’s just say that we got the best use out of our suite! …and sort of trashed the place too….. oopsies.

Since Malcom X (yes this is what my ex shall be called in here) and I didn’t want moss growing underneath our feet, it was on to the next place in the morning!

…..Okay, I’m just going to stop here and say that CLEARLY, we weren’t taking the fastest path back to California. In my opinion, the fastest way isn’t always the best way. We were taking the most adventurous way instead! Also, as bad snow storms were hitting all over the country, we tried to stay as southern as possible. We also had 5 weeks. Can you say… #winning? (yes, I just pulled a C Sheen). There were even times throughout the trip where I would look at a map, seeing 2 or 3 possible ways/ cities we could go to, and instead of deciding for myself which direction, I would either flip coins, close my eyes and point, or even let the people of facebook decide! (not even kidding) It was spontaneous and magical. It made the trip what is was.

Anywho, since we were already deep down south, why not push it to the limit and go to the end? Key West: we are coming for ya!!! (a week later) But first, we decided to stop by DeLand, FL and hang ten with my buddy Erik (from NH) for a little bit. Went to a dive bar, shot some pool, drank some brews, and then slept on his couch.  Thanks Erik! It was nice to catch up and see ya! J

After this… we drive further down to West Palm Beach, and decide that we need to take this road trip where none of our other road trips have gone before: out of the country. So we park the car, leaving it unattended for 5 days as we pack a small bag and gather our passports… and the trip now starts to get a whole lot more interesting to say the least…

I am going to end here with the part 1 of this 2011 road trip. This one is like none other I have had before. We took massive detours, had near death experiences, and almost got stuck in another country…. Ohhh the memories!!!

I wish I wrote this earlier, as it was happening, there were so many meaningful things that I feel I have left out. However, for me at least, it’s better late than never.

Cheers….. 'til part 2
