We have sorted ourselves out with a short-term flat (called a Zwischenmiete) just on the edge of Friedrichshain near Volkspark Friedrichshain. Our tenancy doesn't start until 1st Oct. In the meantime we are staying at Angie's parents house in Bahra, which is about 50 km west of Dresden not far from the river Elbe. There are a bunch of things that you need to do when you move to Germany and we have been getting through some of this bureaucracy. We visited the Rathaus in Riesa a bunch of times to register for tax, get out of the 8% church tax, register that we are in Germany etc. I tried to open a bank account with DKB but I was declined. I think I need to have a job first.

I have started looking for work in Berlin. The job market is different than what I know in Ireland or New Zealand. I am a .NET developer and there not than many .NET jobs in Berlin. Berlin has an awesome startup scene though, the best known start-up being SoundCloud. I have a contact there through I good friend I traveled with in Australia. This will be useful. I have signed up with a number of job sites and have been working with a really good recruiter based out of London. I had one interview so far but it didn't work out. Angie, has applied to 7 hospitals in Berlin, she received 6 responses, 5 interviews and 3 or 4 offers. She will begin working from 1st Nov, the very day we are due to move into our Wohnung.

The summer weather has been great. We went on a trip with Angie's parents and their friends Birgid and Claus Dieter to a small town between here and Berlin where we rented canoes and paddled on the Spray for 4 hrs. There was a really great wine and music festival in Meißen that we went to. All the fruit trees here are heavily laden with apples and pears. We did a spot of fruit picking and managed to gather about 150 kg of apples and pears. A mobile press will come around next week and juice it all for us. Also went to see a movie at the Dresden outdoor cinema on the banks of the Elbe. The movie was "The Artist", perfect first movie for me in German : )

I have signed up for a 4 week German course run by ESL Prolog starting in October. It will be Mon-Fri every week, 4 hours a day. This should help improve my German no end.

It has been really nice to spend a month at Angie's. I have gotten to know her family way better and my Sächsisch is coming on too : )
