From Yogyakarta we chartered a minibus to Cemoro Lawang. This is a small mountain village to base ourselves for a sunrise trip to Bromo. Bromo itself is a relatively small volcano but it is surrounded by much bigger volcanoes. The scene is mystical. Bromo is a must see on the Java tourist trail. We stayed a night at the Lava Cafe hostel. The next morning we left at 4am for sunrise at 5.30 ish. We travelled by jeep to a look out point and later walked up to the Bromo crater. It is quite touristy here but as attractions go, it is not too bad.

The minibus journey was hectic. Our driver who could have been cast as the Indonesian Terminator, drove like a nutcase. At one point he almost ran down a whole family on a motor bike. We were glad to arrive safely at Probolingo. From Probolingo we had to wait around for an hour for a connection to CL. We arrived late at night but had no trouble finding cheap digs for the night. We are currently paying between 90000 and 200000 IDR (8-18 EUR) per night for a room. For this you get fan, cold shower and sometimes a shared bathroom. Standards vary widely but it has been getting better the further east we go.

In Indonesia it seems that you have to pay an entry fee to almost everything, beaches, temples, volcanoes etc. Also you usually pay a small amount for motorbike parking. For this you may get a seat cover to keep it cool.

Check out some of the pictures to get an idea of the impressive scenery.
