The bus ride ($5) from Kratie was a short one, 3-4 hrs approx. There is not so much to do in Kampong Cham but while away a few hours sipping bars at one of the riverside cafe / bars looking out over the Mekong. The river seems to flow in the opposite direction than you would expect which is a bit disorientating. The weather has been beautiful the last few days which is welcoming considering the amount of rain we got in southern Laos. AD is still with us but we go our separate ways after this as he is heading down to Phnom Penh and the southern coast whereas we are heading west from here towards Siam Reap.
During the afternoon when we stopped at a cafe which was packed out with westerners. There was a big group staying in town as part of a package tour organised by Intrepid (http://www.intrepidtravel.com/). It was a youngish group about 18-25. This would definitely not be my bag. They organize everything before you go and you are just along for the ride. Personally, I think it takes away from your experience here if everything is done for you. You end up feeling like a sheep. Perhaps I'm wrong, maybe it is great for people who wouldn't normally do such a trip on their own.
Alas, tmrw we head for Siam Reap and will leave the mighty Mekong which has been our companion since we first crossed here in northern Laos. No worries, we will catch up with her again in Phnom Penh and the delta in Vietnam.
