Ah, now this is what I am talking about, paradise islands. It is truely beautiful here and really relaxed. It was another long travel day to get here from Taman Negara (boat, bus, jungle train (21RM, okay, not that special. some nice jungle views and a good view of Golung Tahan on the way up). taxi). We over-nighted in Kota Bharu and got a taxi to Kuala Besar the next day and the speed boat over to Kecil. The Perhentian islands consist of a big island and a small island (Kecil). Kecil has more budget options and it is where the backpackers go. There are a number of resorts dotted around the island's perimeter. The main one being Long beach which is one of the best beaches I have been on and excellent for swimming. The water is so warm you can stay in all day. We stayed in a smaller enclave in the next bay past long beach called D'Lagoon. It is very nice there and there is only enough space for 30-40 people to stay there. The beach is not so good but it is good for snorkelling. There was a german guy and girl we got to know from Cameron highlands, Taman Negara so we got to know them a bit more. Most of our time was spent lazying at the beach reading books (I am reading Asimov's robot stories), going for the odd swim (I am getting better) and generally being beach bums. Some days we would hike 45 mins over to long beach, spend the day there and catch a water taxi back to D'Lagoon. Island life is very chilled here and it is not too commercial. They say that these islands were once voted in the top 5 paradise islands in the world and I could believe this. Alot of people stay longer here to go diving. The water is so clear, it is excellent. Pictures will not do this place any justice, you have to come experience it for yourself.
