Taman Negara is a huge national park with over 5000 km sq of rainforest jungle it is vast. We stayed in Kuala Tahan (KT) which is the main village (kampung) to explore the park. The journey from Cameron highlands to here is exhausting with a number of bus transfers. You have to get back down to Jerantut and then up to Kuala Tahan. It takes all day so be prepared.

The next day we got a river boat 30 mins up the river and hiked a 13km track back down to KT. At first we started out well, we were enthusiastic and kept a good pace. There is a fun river crossing but we were not sure how high the water goes and was worried about destroying camera equipment but I found a fallen tree 20 meters downs that allowed us to shimy across and hack our way through the undergrowth to get back to the track. We started to notice the sheer amount of leeches on the ground as it is quite wet in places. We grew to hate the leeches but unfortunately it was not mutual. I thought I would be okay with my proper hiking boots and socks but my socks are hand knitted and the leeches could easily burrow their way through. By the time we got back my feet looked like a blood bath and pulled out countless fat leeches from my socks and inside my boot. We were a group six (4 germans, 1 dutch, 1 irish) and the others with just runners and thin machine knit socks faired better. We got lost at one point as it is sometimes possible to find yourself following a track that suddenly ends. We got back 7-8 hours later, water gone and thoroughly exhausted. Our clothes and boots were destroyed. I was glad that we did not sign-up for one of the over night treks!
There are tigers and elephants in this jungle but you have to trek deep into the jungle for a chance of seeing them. We veg'd the next day, hanging around the river boat cafes and attempting to hand wash our clothes. We are looking forward to some island time on the Perentians after this.
