 Introduction

This was one of the highlights of our trip. We decided not to do the Inca trail and do another walk somewhere else instead so we went a different way and headed to Machu Picchu by bus, train & then a walk.

Highlights

Ollantaytambo

We stopped in this town within the sacred valley for a few hours. The entire town was built by the Incas and it was like going back in time walking through the narrow streets. The walls of the buildings were made of were giant rocks. Beautiful.

Aguas Calientes

We took the train here which is the only way to get in, unless you are walking the Inca trail. The sides and ceiling of the train had windows so we could see the beautiful scenery as we followed the river along the tracks.

On the train ride on the way back, one of the staff dressed up as a clown/monster/dog thing and was scaring the passengers. Not quite sure what it was, and even google searches cant help with that one! Then there was a fashion show up and down the carriage. Fae got picked on to wear on of the alpaca ponchos and parade up and down with is on while everyone was clapping. Very strange!

Aguas Calientes is a purpose built tourist town, built either side of a river. It was rammed with restaurants hotels and loads of tourist crap for sale. Nice to stay for a night, but not much more than that

Machu Picchu

While we were there there was a landslide on the road on the path up to Machu Picchu. It was also raining really hard that day too. So instead of getting the bus up , the only way was to walk directly up 3 kms of steps, which would be very difficult & muddy in the rain. The people at the ticket office tried to put us off but we decided to go anyway.

We got up at 4am and after brekkie headed up. It took about an hour and a half, but it was worth it once we got up there as the sun was just peeking over the cliffs as we were arriving.

We entered the park and headed for the highest point to sit and have a snack and look at the amazing view as the sun was coming up. It really was spectacular, and actually even better after we had walked to get there too instead of the bus ride.

The entire city built around 1450, had been hidden in the mountains for hundreds of years after the Incas abandoned it due to the Spanish conquest. It really was set right in the cliffs hidden away from everywhere. A sheer drop into the jungle one side and the other a raging river deep down below.

We walked around the ruins that are slowly being restored and admired the architecture. None built with cement, all the bricks slotted in together tightly. There were also terraces that were used for farming the crops. The pictures show it all, although they still didn't come out as well as it looked in real life!

We picked a good day in the end and it didn’t rain! Yay! On our way back down the steps were people climbing up that had left at a more sensible hour. They all looked knackered in the heat and some were even turning around and giving up! We had to keep turning them around and telling them it’s not far, don’t give up!

We got back and got the earlier train, and then a collective taxi back to Cusco before heading straight to the bus station for a night bus into Bolivia. Long Day!
