Sihanoukville is at the south coast of Cambodia and was a long 15 hour journey for us to get there from Siem Reap… four busses, a tuk-tuk!
In the blistering heat of Cambodia, the beach was very much appreciated. This area is dubbed to be the next big tourist area, for now it's mainly a backpacker hang out with cheap cheap drinks. Lots of infrastructure is being built to prepare for the future, although the electricity still went down on a daily basis, luckily most of the businesses had generators.
We spent a couple of days on the quieter side of Sihanoukville & stayed in a wooden eco bungalow just metres from the beach
Occheteal beach & Serendipity Beach
This area is much more built up. It's a long stretch of sand, lined with bars and restaurants. It’s actually one of the nicer beaches we have visited so far, all the businesses have their tables and chairs set up right on the beach so you can sit, relax & watch the world go by with the sand beneath your toes, watching the sun go down in the evenings being one of the highlights! There are many people walking up and down all day trying to sell books, bracelets, beauty treatments and even fireworks!
We went on a boat trip to visit three islands close to the mainland. The day started by climbing over the water across five old wooden boats to reach our boat at the end. We went snorkelling at two of the islands & the reef was beautiful – you could see sea urchins everywhere about 40cm in diameter! We stopped at another island where we had a BBQ and then walked through the jungle to the other side where there was a beautiful beach. We had plenty of time to swim and sunbathe there. Great day out. :-)
