Introduction

Koh Samui is an island 25km across, about a 5 hour bus and boat trip from Krabi. Its main income is tourism and it is a bit more expensive for food etc than other parts of Thailand, but we still managed to find budget meals. We spent most of our time there relaxing and swimming at the beach, the six days there passed pretty fast!

Highlights

Chaweng Beach – We stayed in a bungalow by the beach which was in the perfect location, ten metres from the beach and also right next to the strip with all the restaurants and bars. Chaweng is one of the busiest & beautiful beaches on the islands. We were surprised to see waves at the beach too as all the other areas in Thailand we had been to were very calm.

Day out on Moped – We went out exploring the island and stopping at various view points and beaches. One of the stops was, Na Muang Waterfall 1 & 2. Waterfall 1 was a 30m drop and you could swim at the base of it, which was lovely & refreshing on a hot day. Waterfall 2 was about a half an hour hike up to view the 80m drop waterfall. We stopped to see another Big Buddha, this one 12 meters tall.  At the base of the Buddha there was a monk giving blessings to people.

Food & Drink

Favourite Local Dish: Thai Noodle Soup

Strangest Thing to See

The sheer amount of stray dogs was shocking; there are hundreds on the island! While walking along the road you see a different one every few buildings looking after his territory. They seemed pretty friendly though so nothing to worry about.

Accommodation:

Chaweng Place Samui – This was a shocker. We booked a budget room for $14 a night. When we got there… the bed had no mattress on it. That must have been what the "budget" bit meant. Ridiculous! It was really uncomfortable to sleep on, but thankfully we had only booked for 2 nights.

Best Beach Bungalows – As mentioned above this hotel was a perfect budget option, $16 a night in the best location on the island. It didn't have hot water and was very basic, but none of that really mattered. Would definitely go and stay there again.
