Location: Krabi, Thailand

Dates: 14/01/2013 – 17/01/2013

Introduction

Krabi is on mainland Thailand, about a 2 hour ferry ride from Phi Phi. It's not really a main tourist destination which was nice for a change, we instantly saw a drop in living costs. We definitely preferred it to the Phuket area, much quieter & more beautiful scenery.

Highlights

Krabi Town

This is where we stayed, it is a pretty quiet town about half an hour away from the beach. The highlight of Krabi town was the range of night markets that operated in the evenings. Each stall had something different to offer - noodles, rice, soups, fried things, deserts, fruit shakes, barbequed meat, you name it!

Beach Hopping

Once again we hired a moped and set off to explore the surrounding areas. We arrived at Ao Nang beach and were surprised at how beautiful it was. We crossed a sandbank to an island close by and had a swim amongst the surrounding rock cliffs & islands in the distance. We then continued for about an hour travelling up the coast and stopping and swimming at every beach.

Island Hopping

We took part in a tour that visited four different islands surrounding the Krabi area. First off we stopped at Chicken Island where we had a swim and you were able to walk through the shallow water to Tup island about 500 metres away. Next stop was Bat bay where we snorkelled in the crystal clear tropical water. There were many different species of colourful fish to see & the tour guide through bread into the water so they came to the surface. Next stop was Poda Island where we stopped for a buffet lunch and a bit of sunbathing. On the journey back to the wharf we stopped off at Pranang Caves. This was a lovely island with caves by the water. There were many climbers climbing the rock faces & there was also some sort of "fertility" shrine in the cave, very strange…see pic!

Food & Drink

Favourite Local Dish: Mixed fried rice inside a pineapple

New Tastes: Yakult Shake, Asian Fruit (sweet & sour)

International McDonalds Meal: Beef Prosperity Burger – Again!

Local Beer: Singah

Lessons Learned:

We put our phones in a dry bag and went swimming in the sea with it. The bag leaked….both iphones broken – photos, contacts, everything lost. Lesson learned – never trust a dry bag again with expensive stuff in it! Had to go out and buy some cheapy replacement phones.

Accommodation:

Thepparat Guesthouse - $30 a night, inc all facilities & brekkie. Was a nice place to stay for a few days although there were many other hotels around for a much cheaper price. The people that ran it were friendly & helpful. Wouldn’t really stay in Krabi town again – Ao Nang is the place to go, right next to the beach.

Expenses

                Meals: $1.50 - $3

                Water: $0.50 for 1.5 litre

Alcohol: $3 for a long neck

Transport: $10 for a moped for a day

                Petrol: $3.5 for a tank

Average Daily Spend per person: $30

Transport there for both of us: $19

Total Spend for both of us inc. Transport: $200

NOTE: Some pics were lost from here too due to the phones breaking - but the pics we do have are beautiful so you get the idea :-)

put the phones in a sealed bag with rice - it soaks up all the moisture in the air and out of the phones, I brought one of my iphones back to life this way. Took a few weeks to but it worked.
