Introduction

Penang is a small island to the north of Malaysia. It's a quiet and relaxed island with mountains and beaches. We arrived at the mainland by train and then got the ferry across to the island. We spent a few days there enjoying the scenery.

Highlights

Overnight Train – We got the overnight train from KL to Penang. The train was about 7 hours and we got a carriage that had beds in it, sort of like bunk beds. We hopped in our beds and slept throughout the night & awoke at 6.30am when the train arrived. Quite a good way to travel as you are travelling and saving a night’s accommodation at the same time

Beach – We spent a day on the northern end of the island soaking up the sunshine at batu ferringhi. The beach is Penang’s most popular destination and there was many

George Town Food Stalls – George Town is the town closest to the ferry wharf. There were lots of streets to explore and down every one were new and different street stalls with various foods to try. Penang is famous for its food; it’s been the cheapest food we have seen yet with a dish starting at 60c.

Watching the Football with the Locals – We watched an Arsenal game in a pub with the locals. None of them spoke English but everyone spoke the same language when Arsenal scored ;-)

Food & Drink

New Tastes:

-         Penang Laksa

Drink in a Bag – Any flavour poured into a clear bag, tie a string around it and stick a straw in it and you are away!

Chapati Roti – Dunno what it was but it was nice.

         Street food buffet

International McDonalds Meal: Prosperity Chicken Burger, Curly Fries & Mango Fizz Drink

Local Beer: Tiger

Accommodation

Love Lane Inn – We had a private room in a hostel with WIFI and Air-con. The bathroom was shared with the other guests. Was a nice place in the middle of George Town $23 per night.
