Introduction

Singapore is a small country, however It's the second most densely populated country on earth. It’s green and especially clean, even chewing gum can only be bought in pharmacies for medical use!

We only had two full days in Singapore so we made the most of them by getting a train pass for the two days and exploring as many areas as we possibly could.

Singapore was impressive, so many people yet because of the amazingly efficient public transport systems you didn’t really notice. There was soooo much different food to try and such little time!

Highlights

Little India – This suburb was like a little taste of India. The streets were lined with heritage buildings and little shops. There was a huge shopping centre / market called the Mustafa centre where you could get everything and anything you needed. There were so many places to eat there too. In the food courts you can get a meal with a drink for around $5 and DELICIOUS too!

New Years Eve at Marina Bay – After most of a bottle of gin between us, we took the remainder in take out bottles and went down to the Marina to watch the fireworks. The bay was beautiful with a backdrop of the city buildings all lit up. We got a great spot for viewing the fireworks at midnight! Don’t quite know how we got home though, but we made it!

China Town – We took a self-guided walk around the streets of China town. We visited a Hindu temple which was built in 1821 without nails called Thian Hock Keng. We looked around all the shops and stalls. In the markets they had live frogs, eels and turtles for sale, 3 frogs for $10!

Food & Drink

Favourite Local Dish: Chicken Biryani

New Tastes:

-         Chicken Biryani (Rice, Egg, Chicken, Curry Sauce, Cucumber) – Can’t believe we have never ordered this before…yum!

Banana Prata (Banana in Filo Pastry)

         Sotong Ball (Squid Balls)

Sui Mai (Fish Balls on a Stick)

         Shark fin Soup

International McDonalds Meal: BLT Burger

Local Beer: Tiger

Accommodation

Hotel 81 Palace, Alljunied – Made a mistake on the hotel and booked for the 30th Jan for 3 days instead of the 30th Dec…whoops! Luckily we could get in, but for $100 a night- to be expected on NYE. Was an OK, basic hotel.  I think we were staying in the red light district though so there were some interesting goings on outside the hotel.
