After my disappointment in Himeji I was determined to see one of Japan's greatest castles. Matsumoto is only an hour and a half on the train from Tsumago so I just knipped there for a day trip. This castle was certainly worth it, and the walk from the station is decent. Many old people were struggling with the steepness of the steps inside, and were causing all sorts of conjestion at the higher levels. I think they should make it free for over 60's on Sunday's or introduce a conjestion charge midweek.
