"THE OLD TRIPLE DELIGHT SCAM"

After arriving at Bangkok, one of the few luxury's we occasionally had was ice cream.
They have a Swensden's ice cream shop near Koh San, so Gary and myself thought we would go in and splash a little cash. It didn't come cheap though. Each scoop cost 27 Baht (45p) so I had to choose my 2 scoops carefully. Topping was 7 Baht extra, which would stretch my budget to bursting point, so I had to have it without the topping.
After paying 54 Baht, Gary asked for a triple delight.
Triple delight I thought? In the corner of the shop was a sign advertising a promotion they were running where if you buy 2 scoops of ice cream you get 1 scoop free.
"NO" this cant be right i thought. Surely the man would have suggested the offer to me?
Sure enough Gary got 3 scoops for the price of 2. there were tears welling up in my eyes!!! Gary started to tuck in to the ice cream with a sense of value for money, where as i felt as if i had just been blatently ripped off.
I had to go back and ask for my extra scoop. It was a fruitless waste of time.
The manager said (in broken English) that it was too late because I had paid for the order, and i didn't ask for the "triple delight"
I've got to say the ice cream i ate left a sour taste in my mouth, and i certainly didn't leave the shop feeling 'delighted'!!

The following day after lunch we were on our way to buy a delicious 7 Baht (9p) ice cream cone from KFC and i suddenly felt the need for a change. I wanted a "triple delight". It just so happens that we were passing a Swensden's, so we went in.
This time i wondered what would happen if i ordered 2 scoops again?.
Would they mention the special offer?. Gary said that he will order first, asking for 3 individual scoops, then asking for the "triple delight" if they try to charge him the full price. Just as the lady was putting the 3rd scoop on i noticed that the 3 for 2 offer had been removed. Oh no. Surely not.
By the time i told Gary it was too late. The ice cream had been made.
I couldn't help but chuckle.
The lady started to type the order into the till. "triple delight, triple delight", Gary desperatley said, doing a "Ted rodgers" (dusty bin) 3.2.1 by spinning his fingers around in the air, in a last ditch attempt to get the offer.
81 Baht, the lady said.
Gary had to cough up, siting down almost numb with shock,(i was still chuckling!) and repeating over and over again that he could have got 11 KFC cones, and still have small change for the same price. I cant believe we've been had by them twice in 2 days.

Gary had to have a lie down back in the room after being stung so badly. On the way in we noticed the hostel had a notice board for travellers to post messages. Some messages were travellers leaving messages for other travellers, others were items for sale, and the rest were warning others of the "scams/rip offs" in Thailand.
We had to laugh at some of the messages warning others. They were so obvious to anyone with half a brain. There was one that said: "Never leave your travellers cheques, or credit cards on the bus seats when you get off at lunch stops. We did, and when we got home we noticed that our credit card had fuel charges made on them" Doh-Pretty obvious you might think?
Just for a laugh we thought we would post our own message to warn travellers in Bangkok.
The message said:
BEWARE FELLOW TRAVELLERS
MY BROTHER AND ME HAVE BOTH BEEN CONNED AND SCAMMED IN BANGKOK. THESE PEOPLE HAVE NO MERCY, AND PREY ON THE VENERABLE AND WEAK!
THEY PRETEND TO DO SPECIAL DEALS ON CERTAIN DAYS, THEN REFUSE TO COUGH UP, THEN WITHOUT NOTICE...JUST REFUSE ALL KNOWLEDGE OF ANY DEAL
SO REMEMBER...BE CAREFUL WHEN ORDERING A SWENSEN'S ICE CREAM!!
