The days ride took us out of Missouri and into Illinois, aka The Land of Lincoln. More importantly it is the home of Popeye. The swollen Mississippi was an impressive sight that day, but what we were really looking forward to was the prospect of Hodge fulfilling his promise to do one afternoons cycling with us.  Naturally, it was a very late lunch that day, and when we finally stopped for something to eat, we had already covered almost 65 miles.  Moreover, we had finished riding through the Ozarks and were onto the flood plains for the briefest of rides.  When Hodge climbed onto the bike he looked truly at ease.  Just as the Mississippi had swollen from the rains, so the torrent of "all you can eats" had started to take their toll on our star driver.  Unperturbed, we got underway, and Hodge to his credit, got stuck in.  He tried to adjust the air con, but he only managed to shift out of first gear.  At one point he thought he saw a snake, but it turned out to be a stray inner tube.  After 10 miles on the flat we came to the one, small hill of the short afternoon.  After a long and anxious wait at the top of the hill we finally spied him steaming and puffing his way over the crest, proclaiming he was even over taken by a butterfly.  Lombard has yet to prove his worth.
