After motoring for 284 miles, I made it to my first official stop at Fort Davis National Historic Park. The fort here protected emigrants, travelers and mail coaches traveling the San Antonio-El Paso Road from 1854-1891. The fort had safeguarded the western Texas fronteir from Apaches and Comanches.
Next, I climbed back into my car and drove 168 miles to Guadalupe National Park in Texas. I took a hike to the Pinery Butterfield Stage Station ruins. After I drove out to McKittrick Canyon and took a hike on the nature trail.
The 86,416 acre park was once an area underneath an ocean 250 million years ago (give or take a day). Over millions of years, marine organisms built up the mountains. When the sea evaporated, the reef entombed fossils of numerous organisms.
