This new adventure began on June 15, 2003. I flew in to
Portland Maine, rented a car and drove 177 miles to White Birches
Campground outside of Acadia national Park.
On June 16th I woke up at 7AM and went to Acadia National Park Visitor Center. I drove to Bar Harbor, a cute touristy town on Frenchman Bay. After exploring BarHarbor I did the 37-mile Acadia Park Loop Road and made many stops along the way. I enjoyed Sand Beach on the Atlantic Ocean. Later I stopped at Little Hunters Beach, a beach with no sand, but tons of granite rocks. Cliffs and trees surrounded both beaches. I sat along some cliffs that plunged down into the Atlantic. I drove to the peak of Cadillac Mountain (1,530 feet) to enjoy impressive views of Bar Harbor, numerous islands and the ocean. Later I explored the surrounding towns
and harbors. I froze in a tent in the upper 30's.
On June 17th I work up at 3:30AM (crap!) and drove to the peak of Cadillac Mountain to be among the first to see the sun rise in the Continental United States at 4:43AM. At 10AM I took a 45-minute ferry ride to Winter Harbor.
Along the way I caught glimpses of Egg Rock Lighthouse and Mark Island
Lighthouse. I explored the tiny non-touristy town of Winter Harbor
before returning to Bar Harbor. In the evening I drove out, climbed
some rocks along the ocean and viewed Bass Harbor Lighthouse. All in
all I drove 217 miles in and around Acadia.
