Capital of the Basque country, and possibly the ETA ... not enough to put me off a visit though. We spent slightly more than a day here.
Even more picturesque then Biarritz, especially the old town Parte Vieja, which boasts possibly the greatest concentation of pubs (tapas bars) per square metre in Spain. Now that's a town!!
Food here is terrific, and inexpensive. A dinner at a tapas bar where I had beer and a few glasses of wine and enough tapas to fill up for dinner, costs by less then 10 Euros. The tapas fare here is also very good, living up to its reuptation that Basque food is the finest in Spain. Being a coastal town they have a higher concentration on seafood, which is fine by me. :-)
Apart from eating, be sure to take a funicular up to Monte Igueldo, where there's a dormant theme park. More importantly, the view of the coast of San Sebastian from up there is breathtaking.
