Our four days in Santiago were so fast and eventful, that it was only fitting that the Santiago Marathon took place here on Sunday.  Having already attended the Philly and NY marathons this year, I am expertly qualified to make this statement:
Chile may be good at rescuing miners, but the USA would dust them in a road race.  It was painfully obvious that Americans** are more fit and active then Chileans.
** = with the exception of the following Americans: Skidz, DocOLove, Spinman, J.Ohagen, Y.Gleyzer-Weiss.

We started this gorgeous sunny day watching the marathon in the morning, and then went to day 2 of Lollapalooza:
Highlights: The Flaming Lips (thanks Lance and Julie, you guys were right);  Sublime (with Rome) (Jay I- I will def see them with you next time they roll through Philly); and of course Kanye brought it strong for almost 2 hours.
Lowlights: Having to wait in line for about five hours to get in to the festival on day 1 (Chlieans havenīt quite figured out how to organize a music festival); Also, no alcohol was sold at the concert but we turned this in to a positive and snuck a bottle of Pisco (Chilean liqour) in on day 2.

Seeing 311, Janes Addiction, and Sublime perform gave me flashbacks to the 1990īs.  Although this lineup doesnt even come close to the bands that I saw at the second Lollapalooza back in 1992 - Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam.

My favorite musical moment took place that night back at the hostel. A group of 4 or 5 Chilean guys were jamming and singing with an acoustic guitar that the hostel had laying around, and we pulled up chairs and joined in.  They were singing Chilean folk songs mixed in with some American classic rock staples: Led Zep, the Beatles, The Eagles. Then out of nowhere, one of Chilean guys busts out the song "More than Words" by Extreme, a cheesy song from the 1990īs, that I never rally liked...  Until now..  hearing this Chiliean guy pour his heart and his broken english into it.  Iīm guessing that it must have been popular when he was learning how to play the guitar.  Anyway, great song and great memory!

Santiago was a blast.  Far less touristy than Buenoes Aires.  Much more real.  The Chilean people that we met were extremely altruistic.  So much beautiful spanish architecture mixed with modern life.  We stayed in a very cool neighborhood called Barrio Bella Vista, a colorful college neigborhood filled with funky bars and cool architecture.  Dogs are roaming everywhere in Santiago.   A local told me that they have a saying  Ļ"the dogs own the city, and they let the people live there."  So true.  I was looking through my pictures of Santiago and there is a dog in about 1/3 of them.  Dogs were running the marathon, dogs were at Lollapalooza, everywhere!

Dave Oliva, my good friend from highschool, you are a true pioneer!  Dave moved to Santiago some time in the 1990s with his girlfriend Jenny, and they taught English here for a year or two.  At the time, I didnīt quite understand why you chose Santiago, but now I get it.  Itīś an amazing city.

I am writing this blog from the Chilean coastal city of Valparaiso.  If San Francisco and Cuba had sex and made a baby, it would be Valparaiso.  We have been here for 3 days, and it has been my faviorite stop thus far.   Pictures coming soon.

Besos!
