Hi all,
After leaving Pompeii we headed back to Naples for the night. I was still kind of in shock at how amazing Pompeii was but there was more to come.
After another ham and cheese rolls breakfast, we caught a train south early in the morning to visit the other once-buried sea-side holiday town of Ercalrano (Herculaneum). This place was not as large as the ruins at Pompeii (partly due to the fact thgey have been unable to excavate (scavi) most of the place as it is under the modern town. It must really annoy the archeologists that are working there (there were about 30 that I saw) as there must be many treasures still kept hidden that could unlock the secrets of the past.
Herculaneum was in a much better condition than Pompeii overall and had some beautiful frescoes decorating many of the walls in the buildings. I took a lot of photos, but i am unable to load these up as this old computer i am on is lacking all things USB. Haha. Will get them up when i find an "internet point" that is a little more accomodating.
After Ercalarno, we went back to Naples and spent the afternoon on the roof of a tour bus checking out the sites and i am pleased to report that the "nice part" of Napoli is not as shabby as where we are staying in the east of the city near the main train terminal. It is bustling and crowded, but has a certain charm, much like a scruffy dog. Napoli pizza agrees with me but i am yet to find a decent Italian coffee - 'cup-pa-chino' is just not that flash here apparently. Tomorrow we head back to Rome to spend the next few days of our trip and i am just dying to get there!
