Crossing over into Portugal, we ducked into the tourist information hut to load up on maps. To our surprise, the ever helpful office bent over backwards to help us with our questions and offered loads of help to plan our trip. (So far this has been the best tourist office on our trip).
Feeling up beat... we started to shake off the Spain (sorry Spanish friends.. but Portugal as you will read is a wonderful, friendly and beautiful place where so far....we have only met friendly locals who like to help).
With maps in hand, we head towards the coast to explore the marsh lands which hug the coast for the first 60kms of our journey. Finding a quiet fishing town, grab a bottle of wine and celebrate our 5th year and watch another fantastic sunset. The little town with over 50 fishing boats, had people coming along to fish all night and in the morning we followed some foot prints across the inlet to see what all the fuss was about. Seeing no fishermen, we spied some locals digging in the sand with nets and their feet, occasional picking up little clams (pipies). The locals insisted that they were yummy to eat.
Leaving the quiet town, we head to Faro to see the church of human bones. This Church had to sell off some of it's land, the grave yard. Solution... build a creepy church out of all 1245 skulls and other bones which are built into the annex of this little church. Arriving at closing time, the pasture was happy to admit us (again the locals ever helpful and friendly). Check out out photos.
After a wander of Faro (nice town with fort), we head further along the coast to check out some red cliffs next to the beach. Amazing coastline... again, we'll upload some pics.
Our final stop was the old maritime fort at the far end of the southern Portuguese coast. We wanted to see the 'wind rose' a compass of sorts made of rocks on the ground. The true purpose is unknown since it was unearthed earlier this century. Regardless, it was great to wander the fort and see fishermen risking their lives as they precariously fish off 50metre cliffs.
Dinner and a beach walk on our way up north to Lisbon
