Crossing over the border into Hungary, we head towards Eger to see what their local wines are like as well as the natural springs with medical properties. Arriving in Eger, we did a huge Tesco shop to restock and headed out to the 'valley of the beautiful woman', an area where all the vineyards gathered to market their wines. Donna pointed out that it seemed to take away the romance of wine tasting. Efficient as it was, the wines were not that amazing and we left with the only wine which tasted drinkable, carried away in a ‘prestigious’ plastic bottle rather than the elegant glass bottles.

Out of the city we head towards the natural springs where, we are told, have natural waterfalls with calcium deposits and cascading thermal water over the rocks. After befriending a lady in the local village for directions which we received in  English, French, German and Hungarian, we head to the first of two sites. Sadly the first site felt like an overpriced club med site which took away from the natural image portrayed by the tourism office in Eger. Thankfully, with the advice from the local lady, the second site seemed cheaper with more locals amongst two thermal pools (although it also looked very unnatural).

Smelly water and two hours later, we leave to head towards our friends who live in Budapest.

Arriving in Budapest, we navigate to Evi’s house (with a very simple map). Thankfully we never got lost. Polishing off the wine from Eger, we have a good catch up and laugh into the evening.

Day 1 Budapest – We make it into the city to catch up with our second friend (Dori) who was working with a Hungarian youth group from around the world who have returned to see Hungary for themselves.  Coffee and several laughs later, Dori arranges us passes into the Budapest theme park that evening so we can continue to catch up.  Again we overdid it that day and walked around the city until our legs dropped off (sites: Citadel.... Fruit markets in a wonderful old building... Simpla, a funky bar made up of off pieces of furniture in a funky warehouse feeling building). Theme park playing that evening with some great laughs with Dori and Evi.

Day 2 Budapest – Shopping for new shorts for Soren, a strainer for Evi and a wander of the city again. That evening we treated ourselves to a movie (Inception) in which we totally loved watching!!!

Leaving Budapest, Soren gets side swiped by an overtaking motorist which made him very mad. Luckily no damage done except a bit of road rage from Soren.

Memories of Hungary

-          Catching up with some great Hungarians who actually smile and have fun (Evi and Dori). Sadly the majority of their fellow citizens do not know how to smile.

-          Real thermal spa’s with the real smell

-          Avoiding the highways as there was a road tax to use the roads.

Eger! We were there on our Eastern Europe romp in 2008 and felt much the same about the wine...though I'm pretty sure I was still fairly tipsy on the walk home. I really wish I knew you were going to be in Budapest back at this time...my parents lived there and would have been happy to give you free food, a free place to stay and free showers. :( Next time, perhaps.

It's safe to say I'm addicted to your travelpod. At the end, you're going to have to hit me with lots of numbers on costs and lots of best of/worst of so I can do this one day soon. :)
