Saturday June 25th, 2005 - Best Hostel Ever

We arrived in Nice at dinner time and were quite starved but decided to find our hostel first. This turned into quite the adventure. We first couldn't find the bus stop they were talking abot in the directions so we decided to use the walking directions and got so very lost. we ended up going back to the train station and calling them and they reassured us that the stop was there. we found it, it had been hidden behind a tour bus before!

We then met 2 other Canadians from Calgary who were going to the same hotel as us. we caught the bus and called them to come get us as they had told us to do. we were then joined by 2 girls from the states and we all waited the 5 minutes they told us it would take. an hour later they finally came and brought us to the hostel which was absolutely amazing. when we checked in, they told us we'd be moving rooms the next night which we thought was weird but they assured us it was the way things had to be. we had a wonderful room with our own bathroom and an amazing view.

we ended up having to order pizza for dinner because by now it was about 10pm and nowhere else was open. the guy who owned the place ordered the pizza for us and we ate with our new Canadian friends. SO MANY people there were Canadian as well - it was great!

we turned in early because we were quite tired.

Sunday June 26th, 2005 - Worst Hostel Ever

Nice is amazing and sooo beautiful. Today we headed down to the port and walked around for hours. we ended up at the beach and went swimming in the French Riviera. it was one of the best days and it quickly turned into one of our favourite places we've been so far.

the night was no so much fun. we had given our laundry in to be washed (they washed it for you for 5 euros) and we needed to switch rooms. we waited in line for about 30mins and finally they gave us the keys to the new room. they showed us and we were mortified. we had ordered an ensuite and this room was a single with another bed shoved in, with a shared dorm shower and bathroom that both smelled like someone had peed all over it. we were also on the main floor RIGHT BESIDE where people check in and people check in at all hours. we told them we had booked online months ago and there was NO REASON why we should have been moved to somewhere without a bathroom but they had no more ensuites and gave us some money back to compensate - which it did not. Liz was quite shaken by this and we were both badly burnt from swimming and having the sunscreen wear off. It was not a fun night.

Monday June 27th, 2005 - Overnight Train...pretty ghetto

Today we woke up and checked out of our ghetto room. we were able to leave our bags with them so we didn't have to carry them around all day. today we did a bus tour of Nice and went up into the hills and saw some amazing views of the city. we stayed out of the sun as much as possible seeing as we were both quite crispy from yesterday.

we walked along the main shopping street and wandered in and out of air conditioned stores until we made our way back to the hostel to get our bags. we hung around there for a bit and then a really nice guy who works at the hostel drove us to the bus stop to get us back to the train station. we ate some Chinese food at a restaurant for dinner and headed to our overnight train.

we were the first ones in our cabin and had a secret wish that we were the only ones. of course, not so. our cabin was full - but we met some really cool people. one guy named Chris was also from Canada and was studying in Rome to become a priest. another guy was from France originally, but worked in California but now lives in Naples. we all chatted it up all the way to where the other 2 people came on and we had to put the beds down. Chris ended up moving to another cabin because he'd mixed up the numbers but that was ok. it was a windy night for Liz because she was right by the window where the breeze came in. surprisingly, both of us slept a little on the train.

oddley enough though, the train arrived 2 hrs late. so we arrived in Rome at 8:30 instead of 6:30. Chris found us and made sure we knew where we were going.
