September 11 2010, 11.27 local time. We are on our way!   We had a wonderful  send-off  by family and friends, although it was touch and go whether we would get away with the weather as it was.  All the planning in the world couldn't allow for the vagaries of the British climate…

Take off was a piece of cake and  once mid channel, the cloud cleared and we had blue skies all the way to Cannes, France. A good view of Mont Blanc en route was an interesting surprise. We decided to stay the night there as we didn’t have sufficient time to get all the way to Rome and put the aircraft away before nightfall.

We were directed to a small hotel, metres away from the airport terminal; this was quite adequate for a good meal and a desperately needed decent night’s sleep!

Note:  Our trip is being followed by young Jamie and his classmates as their Geography project for this year.  So no pressure!  We will be adding questions for them at the bottom of each blog; for anyone else so inclined, please feel  free to answer and drop us a line.  No prizes though!

Question:  Cannes is famous for its Film Festival, but what is the name of the wind that funnels down the Rhone valley?

Hi Pat,

Posted this on the BALPA forum.

RE:Capt Pat Elliott (BA - Retired) - Around the world flight in a Rutan Long-EZ [G-LGEZ]

Maybe the first sighting!!

I was out walking the dog 30 minutes ago (11.40 BST) when I heard an interesting aeroplane engine, and it was getting nearer.

There it was - a Long-Ez right over Loxwood heading South towards Pulborough. There is quite a low overcast here today so the machine wasn't particularly high, anyway I waved in case it was Pat and Linda, and wished them well in their adventure. The dog barked too.

If it was you Pat, I'll be keeping an eye/ear out for you over the next few months.

Good luck mate,

Very best wishes,

Chris.

Cheers Pat!

If you should happen to find yourself in the Seattle, Washington (USA) area during your journey, let me know - we'll have a spare guest bedroom ready, along with a BBQ salmon dinner...

Pat, I was flying south from Bergamo over Rome listening for you on the 11th, but it was getting too dark. Little did I know you were in Cannes! Good luck!

Does this thing have hot food and toilet facilities? I'm trying to get my head around flying without being served constant tea and airline-type food. I think it's called 'nightmare'! Good luck, and fair winds!

Hi,

Just flew out of Carp (Ottawa) and noticed your Long on the ramp. Couldn't figure out why there was UK registered Long in Ottawa! I used to fly G-LEZE out of Fairoaks a few years back. Now living in Stittsville, just down the road from Carp. If I had known your were coming I'd have offered a room.

Best of luck with the rest of your trio.
