Retrospective entry to recap the last couple of days in Montanita.

We ended up spending an additional day in Montanita (not that this was much of a hardship) but it was unfortunately due to (in addition to my oesophagitis) the Ecuadorian equivalent of Deli belly...nice! Anyway so I missed most of the last day of school. But can now say as weve left and Mother wont worry, that apparently weve survived our first earthquake. We all rocked into school on Thursday morning and our Spanish teacher asked en Espanola whether wed woken to the earthquake. She was a little shocked at our blank faces and saying wed slept through the thing at 4am. Anyway good thing were not now at the bottom of a volcano that last erupted 3 years ago. Its okay Mum, honestly its the next mountain over and weve already planned our escape route! So we had a nice chilled last day enjoying a lie in. Then nice walks along the beach and the boys braved the 2 metre surf, well they played around in the white water up to their nipples! The boys did have one last night out at Cana Grill on Friday but Ill leave Phil to tell you about that. The boy went from h you cant drink so I wont drink to well I might have a couple of beers to were going out for couple more, be back in about an hour (10.30pm- poor girlfriend tucked up in bed not being able to drink), to rather predictably rocking in at 4am smelling like a giant cocktail. Im sure hell try to protest his innocence, but people- above is the truth!

We met a lovely German couple who were also doctors and wanted to pick our brains about NZ. Fortunately theyd also been to our next two planned destinations so we got something out of them too. Anyway, Sunday involves getting a cab at 5am then 8 and 1/2 hour journey to our next destination. Banos here we come...

Unfortunately Alex had a rough finish to Montanita, and Chief and myself got knocked out in the second round of the pool comp. I knew we were in trouble when one of our opponents asked us if we had a bye to the second round or if we had actually beaten anyone to get there- w----r.

There were still some highlights to come. In class on Friday when Alex was skiving school/ill I was presenting my home work. I tried to say in Spanish that Alex cooked good seafood. Apparently what I actually said was that Alex is a smelly homosexual! Got to be careful with this language. The surfing on the Friday evening was the best all week and as we got out of the water at dusk it felt that it may have "clicked". This was followed by a BBQ back at the Cabanas and some organised-fun American style. We won a bottle of local spirit for putting a bow tie on a kitten (cardboard, not real) with me blindfolded and I was robbed of a further bottle when they decided to ignore the fact that I had won a drinking competition from a beaker.

After that it is true, I did pop out into town with Chief and Johan for a quick drink which may have turned into a couple more and I may have got home a bit late with the smell of cocktail on me. Unsurprisingly we ended up in the same nightclub as the previous week. Again it was good value and confirmed my belief that "Smells Like Teen Spirit" maybe the best pop/rock song ever. Im not saying its my favourite, but when it came on in this Ecuadorian nightclub, everyone went wild and everyone was smiling. Combine this with its place as being a song for disaffected youths and that it was both critically and commercially successful and the argument is pretty strong.

Anyway, due to Alex not being great we were spared an early morning bus following the night before and there was another, more sedate, day left in Montanita before the five am bus.
