When I arrived at the boats in La Ceiba I hadn't really decided if I was going to Utila or Roatan. At the last minute I decided on Utila and on the boat over met the group of travelers I would be spending that week with. There was a brother and sister from Texas and 3 Canadian guys. We all ended up going to the same dive shop, and the Canadians were in the same Open Water dive course and dorm as me. That week I learned how to dive, played lots of cards, and drank lots of great Nicaraguan rum.
Diving made me a bit nervous at times as I'm not a great swimmer, but I stuck it out, finished the course and got my cert. Being underwater and swimming alongside coral reefs and colorful fish was incredible, an experience I'll never forget and will definitely try again. While diving I saw eel, baracuda, lobster and dozens of multicolored fish I don't know the names of. Utila was a decent place to hang out, with a couple of cool bars and places to eat. There was a bar with a dock, and a hole they lit up at night so fish were attracted to the spot, and Bar in the Bush on our last night was alot of fun. Drinks are so cheap in Honduras, a rum and coke was less than a dollar.
