Namgi and Puchung (my two fave students and I) spent a glorious day in the sun, walking through the recently harvested rice paddies and corn fields to a nearby lake, in search of a lotus or two. Stepping out of the monastery for the first time in a few weeks was a bit of a shock for all of us. Last time the earth was still a soggy and green from the monsoon season; this time the red clay lay hardened and cracked beneath my feet, and the air smelled of old burlap sacks. The land all around us was dying. Dying to be reborn again.
It was a most amazing day. Imagine childhood days of summer- making grass bracelets, a tire swing, ice cold lemonade, an everlasting afternoon, splashing about in a lake, making up songs as we go. Of course this wasn't all there that day (I haven't seen ICE in months!) but the spirit of the day was the same.
