The ferry trip that we just took was SO LONG. To get to Greece from Italy, you have to take a ferry from Bari, Italy to one of many ports in Greece. Due to the fact that we needed to be in Athens to meet some of our friends, we had to take the longest ferry ride around. We got onto the ferry at 5pm to secure a spot to sit on the deck and then had to wait 3 hours for the ferry to leave. After the ferry left, we had about 16 hours worth of travel time on the med sea before reaching Patras. Wheew....

The ferry was not a great time but it wasnt horrible either. We met some nice people and drank our wine out of our huge jugs and shared it with everyone who wanted any. We met some nice people from the states as well as people from Brazil and Canada. When you are one a packed ferry for that long, you are bound to make some new acquaintances. There wasnt much to do but talk, sleep, and read so that is how we spent most of our time.

We arrived in Patras exhausted from sleeping the night on the hard deck and then had to wait 3 more hours before we could catch a train to Athens. We found our new favorite cheap meal in Gyros(2 Euros for a Gyro) and then just hung out for another hour or two before enduring the stifling heat and inefficiency of the Greek train system. Wow, what a way to end your 30 straight hours of travel with 3 hours on a slow and extremely hot train packed to the gills. We did meet some nice Dutch girls who recognized us from the ferry with our huge jugs of wine and they at least made the trip more interesting.

We finally arrived in Athens and checked into our hotel. Ohh....you think our day of travel is over? No. We had to meet our friends at the airport at 12pm which is about 70 minutes out of town by bus. So after getting to the bus and heading to the airport and back, we had logged almost 35 hours of travel without rest or a shower. I guess it goes without saying that my shower after we got back was one of the best I have had in a while.

Now we have one day in Athens before heading out to the relaxation and beaches of the Greek Islands.
