Mt. Rainier rises over 14,000 feet above sea level.  My father climbed to the summit when I was a kid. Not an adventure that appealed to me.  But I still love going for day hikes.  I celebrated my 40th birthday up here.

One of my favorite trips is to Panorama Point.  It has great views of Mt Rainier, Mt Adams and Mt St Helens.  The hike up from the visitors center is less than three hours long.  But it seems much further removed.  Relaxing on the rocks, I hear only the breeze.  Looking out over the Cascade mountain range, I feel close to nature.

The animals are pretty friendly too.  Chipmunks and deer will practically eat out of your hand.   Once I snuck up to within 50 yards of some mountain goats.  They’re pretty shy, however, and took off pretty fast.  Brown bear are common too.  I saw a pair when I was nine years old.   Fortunately, they were on the next ridge – quite a ways away.
