Most families live on a large compound. The perimeter is surrounded by a thick cement or stone wall. A large arch encompasses the doorway which is often left open. Sometimes there are small statues outside.
Temples are similar. And most other buildings in fact. I was surprised how pervasive architecture is in Balinese culture.
