What would you do on a Saturday....? But let's first talk about Friday night! We had to take one more look at the lights and life of Times Square. Just 2 blocks from it's north west corner we went to find Pongsri - which is a much recommended Thai restaurant. You know that it's going to be good when the place is full of orientals! Walking back through Times Square it's clear that it's an advertisers' dream with so many people just hanging around watching the changing, moving images on all the building fronts. It's quite clearly a whole night's entertainment and also a good place to people watch.
Nearly at the end of a fab week in New York, there seemed to be only one place to go on Saturday morning, to mix with 'friends'. Greenwich Village is today really called West Village but still has much of it's famous arty and bohemian as well as gay atmosphere. Christopher Park, Sheridan Square & the Stonewall Inn are at its' very heart. In June 1969 there was rioting on Christopher Street when police raided the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay establishment, in order to curb booze law violations. Over the next few days, in what is known as the Stonewall Rebellion, several 1000 rioters filled the streets to protest the police action. Thereafter, Christopher Park became a symbol of the gay liberation movement.
This morning the Saturday market was in full swing and the place to buy anything from food to clothes and much more.... Jess was even approached by a lady who, putting a hand on her shoulder, said, "Would you like one?" .... meaning simply a Chinese shoulder massage...!!!
Like many New Yorkers Saturday is also about a visit to the park. We went all the way up to the very top of Manhatten, north of Harlem, and into Washington Heights to the Fort Tryon Park which overlooks the Hudson River to the west & the Bronx to the east. Beautiful views, beautiful people to watch and even many late summer flowers still in bloom.
And tonight? We're off to a great US big meat BBQ.....! Tell you about it tomorrow!
