I'm here in Lithuania, trying to get my head and fingers around the russian keyboard at this computer in the hostel so apologies if some of this is a bit unreadable! Got to Vilnius yesterday on the overnight bus from warsaw. was totally shattered so spent most of yesterday sleeping! the hostel is a bit grubby compared to the one in warsaw and is a bit too close to the train station for comfort - i wanted to be near it for convenience sake but i didnt quite want to see the trains from the kitchen window! - made it as far as tourist information centre to get a guide for today. vilnius is totally lovely. its smaller than you would think for a capital city and is very pretty but not in a too perfect to be true way. there's crumbling buildings and run down parts but that seems to add to the charm. lotsa churches - the hostel i'm staying in is right by a famous one with a miraculous virgin mary in it according to my guide book which explains the fervent sign-of-the-cross-making (is there a proper word for it?) by people who pass under the archway. went to the national museum and the amber museum and had a climb up to the castle tower for some great views. no more mishaps to relay (yet) although I havent been to the supermarket yet! am off tomorrow to trakai castle tomorrow which is 45 mins away on the train - so i shall have fun trying to buy a train ticket tomorrow!!
