Not the worst looking of places. This week involved visiting bamboo island, monkey island and Maya beach..which in case you didn't know was the setting for the film, 'the beach,' picked because of it's unreal beauty!

We snorkeled around the islands like professionals despite Aidan losing his snorkel to the depths of the ocean within 30 seconds of his first dive!  Luckily we met a few cool people on the trip and our new friend Thomas somehow dived 12 odd meters to pick it up from the ocean bed.  Upon seeing this I though, okay that didn't look too hard before nearly drowning 3 meters into my dive...that about ended any experimentation for me!

Phi Phi is stunning but we were going there to get a break from the tourism of Phuket so we were a bit shocked to arrive from the ferry with a horde of party mad bucket lovers!  The island was crazy and finding a cheap bungalow was impossible!  We managed to somehow find a cool place, bit pricey though!  We then also managed to stay clear of alcohol and buckets for all but one of the nights which, believe me people, was no easy accomplishment!  Every night the beach was just jammed with fire starters and bucket downers, amazing!!!

We also managed to see our first Thai boxing matches, well so we thought...apparently it was just anyone from the audience who wanted a free bucket could get in the ring and pound someone to pieces...now if that's not culture people I don't know what is!!!  Luckily sense prevailed for us and I turned down the request!

All in all we were a bit disappointed with the island.  Beauty was all around it but buckets, fire and tourism rule and you can get that mostly anywhere here.  The island tours and snorkeling rescued it though as well as meeting some cool people so still a good experience.  Plus the views from the cliffs were amazing and the people as ever were so friendly...amazing to think this place was basically destroyed a few years ago!
