Well Summer has come and gone. Somehow I don't know how to fit so much into this entry in our journal here. I guess the first place to start, is our trip to Cypress. We had already sailed and motored from Fairhaven over to a slip I managed to sublet in Squalicum harbor. That in itself was an adventure. After talking around though we did eventually find a dock to tie up to. In any case with that hurdle aside we set sail for Cypress island. Cypress is beautiful. There are rarely very many boats there, and there is nothing on the island other than a park. Eagle Harbor is a great place to pull in if you are ever in the San Juan islands. We set sail and made it to Cypress a few hours later. I have a friend go ahead on his boat so that if we lost engine power, had really any problems, we would have a buddy boat there to help. The sail was amazing. Unlike the previous experience trying to beat across the bay with only the jib, with the main up she flew. Though we must have been riding the tide, we hit 9 knots on the GPS (and I of course took a picture and pushed her some more). With a little more effort (and the engine) I hit 10.2 knots. I find that respectable for a boat I expected would hit 6 and then stop. When we pulled into the little bay, we immediately rowed out and dropped the crab pots to prepare for what would end up being one of the best dinners of the summer. Jason rafted up alongside in his boat and we went ashore to hike to the top of the bluff on Cypress. There is an amazing view from up there. The hike can't be more than a few miles, but when you reach the top you see a panorama of the islands spread out before you like no where else, except maybe Mt. Constitution on Orcas. After pulling the pots we found we had a gourmet dinner just a few minutes away. There is something about eating dinner on your boat for the first time that is especially amazing. We stayed out until Sunday then sailed home. It was a great little excursion and despite everything, nothing broke.
