We travelled by bus from San Pedro de Atacama to Salta, passing through the Quebrada de Huamuhuaca on the way, a stunning desert canyon in the very north of Argentina. We were excited to arrive in Argentina, our last country and one we were pretty sure we were going to like. Carne, tango, vino! Salta itself is famous for its empanadas, its locro stew, and its peņas - traditional folk music. We enjoyed all of these during our stay. After a couple of days, we caught a bus south to Cafayate, the second largest wine growing region in Argentina. Not as famous as Mendoza, and more laid-back, here we spent 3 days visiting the local vineyards, sampling the crisp and fruity Torrontes white, enjoying the spectacularly good ice-cream at Miranda's (including wine ice-cream!) , visiting a local goats cheese factory, hiking to the local waterfalls, and exploring the stunning Quebrada de Cafayate and the beautiful rock formations within it.
