After a 10 hour Greyhound ride (sneakily taken overnight, definitely the best way to travel for that long) Mairi and I arrived in New York City at 7am. We took the subway up to the hostel, which was further uptown than we thought, but surprisingly easy to navigate especially after using the tube for so many years!

We met up with Katy & Steve, who had arrived a couple of days earlier due to work commitments. All of us had a different idea of what we wanted to do, but we quickly arranged a plan and set off to Central Park. Mairi and Steve, the cultural clever clogs that they are, went off to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art respectively, while Katy & I decided on a little culture trip of our own - Central Park Zoo! In hindsight, this was possibly the best option, as Mairi and Steve weren't too impressed with their museums! Seeing polar bears in the middle of New York was really bizarre, but we took loads of pictures before meeting up with the others for a trip to Strawberry Fields. You can't really miss this landmark as there were so many tourists there, and someone had put a rose in the middle in memory of John Lennon which made for a great picture.

Bloomingdales was the next stop, as Katy had her eye on the Little Brown Bag, so we had to find something suitably cheap for her to buy to obtain said bag. Steve wanted a picture of the Flatiron Building, which we stopped off at before going to the main attraction - the Empire State Building. Katy & Steve had saved this landmark so we could all go together, as they were going home the next morning. Unfortunately it was raining and miserable by this time, not great weather for the spectacular views we were hoping for. By this time, it was surprising that Mairi and I could still walk after being up for roughly 48 hours, you can't be surprised by the fact that you can't sleep properly sat upright on the bus!!!

Next stop was Times Square which was very busy, and much like Leicester Square. There are neon lights and tacky souvenirs everywhere. Anyway, today was the busiest day in terms of landmarks and sightseeing, we got loads done so decided to slow down for the next couple of days. Nice as it is going round in a group, especially in a city like New York, you have to cater for everyone, which we handled pretty well today!!
