We left Chile on the Sunday night, arrived in New Zealand on Tuesday and the flight was only 13 hrs - how does that work?? It made a nice change to be met at the airport though, as Vic and Mark came to pick us up- despite having arrived at 4.55am!

After a nice brew of decent tea (finally with milk!) it was no more buses for us as we got our hire car and headed north to Whangerei (pronounced fangeri) to our hosts for a few days Kay and Alan. Boy were we looked after.

It is hard to convey how great it felt to stay in a house, with a lounge, sofas, non shared bathroom and of course the spa pool, games room and bar helped!!

Day one was spent seeing the local sights, and a pleasant walk to Whangerei Falls and seeing some huge Kauri Trees.

Day two meant a trip further up north and to the Bay of Islands. It was a gorgeous location and we sailed around in a pretty swanky looking boat. They are formerly volcanic and now make up a drowned landscape (Rhea for you Geography geeks out there). There are some very impressive lifestyles to see, with huge summer houses bought as "souvenirs" by the rich. The tour took us to an island to break for lunch and we duly obliged with some very nice fish and chips, with a superb view.

Day three we got to some of the tropical coastline at its best. We visited a couple of stunning beaches which were pretty much deserted - hopefully a sign of what is to come for us on the south island.

Each evening followed a very satisfying pattern. An appetising drink from the bar, great grub (Roast Beef (with yorkshires!), Roast chicken, Pork chops and Peri peri prawns and Steak!!), a dip in the spa follwed by games of pool/table tennis all washed down with a lot of alcohol!!
