Where I stayed
Today we are off to visit the Dordogne region of France – supposedly has some of the prettiest villages in all France. We left after breakfast and continued with our struggle to drive on the other side of the road – it is not as easy as you might think.
The countryside was pretty with Autumn colours everywhere, and yes, we passed through some lovely villages (just a pity they didn't build their roads a bit wider as we had to be very careful!) But our driving must be improving – we did not hit the right hand gutter at all today! (Yes, have to admit we hit it three times yesterday.)
We arrived in Sarlat around 2PM; checked in to the hotel – seems very nice and the lady at the desk was very friendly and spoke enough English that we had no problems.
Then we went to explore the town (by foot). It is a steep 700m walk down o the town from the hotel. The "old" town is medieval – only one street allows cars – the rest are too small. It is a really beautiful town – many small twisty streets and lovely old houses and shops. Many people live in the town itself and it had a really nice lived in feel.
We stopped for a drink at the Hotel de Ville in the main square and then found a little restaurant in one of the back street for dinner. Dinner was very good – 3 courses and a half bottle of wine for under 50 Euros total. And the food was delicious – Michael had grilled breast of duck and we both agreed that it was exceptional. Duck seems to be a specialty of the area as it was on the menu everywhere. The region is also renowned for Foie Gras.
We then struggled up the very steep track back to our hotel and bed.
