I traveled with a group of about two dozen students to Gent. When we left the train station in Liege, the day was looking like it was going to be quite nice. But, the further we traveled, the worse it looked. By the time we got out of the train and walked about 50 meters away from the Gent station, it started to rain. The rain literally didn't stop all day. It made for some pretty miserable weather and some really cold kids. I really wish the weather would have been better because Gent seemed like it would have been a really nice city. We did walk around a good part of it, and we saw some interesting buildings and the main castle.
The castle was definitely the highlight of the trip for me. Besides the castle in Spain, this is the first real castle I've been too. It had all of the stereotypical features you'd expect from a castle. It would have been easy to pick me out as the non-European of the group. Everybody else had seen dozens of castles, where as I was running around, wanting to see everything. I also really enjoyed seeing authentic suits of armor and old weaponry. It was so exciting.
My other highlight of the trip was definitely where we went to eat. It was a soup bar with some really good pumpkin soup (considering this was my first bowl of pumpkin soup, I might not have the best opinion...). For just 4 euros, we got the soup with cheese, meatballs, croutons, some other toppings, two pieces of bread and butter, and an apple. I was ridiculously stuffed after eating all that. I was also really glad that the soup was warm because my fingers had turned a lovely shade of violet, which is always awesome :) I will never forget my gloves on a trip again. promise.
Because of the rain, we were ready to leave almost right after the castle. We stopped in this cute little pub for some beer, hot tea, and hot chocolate. Then we caught the train back to Liege and were in town by 6:00.
