In the end we spent one whole week in San Juan del Sur. The first night we stayed with David, the owner of the Sunrise Beach Hotel. The next morning we moved to the hotel and got a private double room with own bathroom. Paula and Franco wrote to confirm that they would be arriving the same day but didn't say if they had booked accommodation or not. We went and had a look around town to see if we could find a nice hostel to stay around for a few nights, Sunrise Beach was nice but didn't have much to offer for common areas and no pool. We literally checked nearly all the hostels and ended up right at the end of the beach, close to the disco Crazy Crab. There was a new hostel across the foot bridge, they just opened 4 months ago, called Yajure Surf Hostel. They had a nice swimming pool, free breakfast and dorms for 10usd. It looked like the best option San Juan del Sur had to offer. We told them we would be back with some friends and that we might be wanting 4 beds for the following night.
We went back to Sunrise Beach and told them where we were going for lunch, as we had told Paula and Franco to look for us at the hotel but we didn't know what time they would arrive. We just got our plates as they walked into the restaurant. The Sunrise Beach was full again so they took the room at Davids house that night. The following morning we all moved to the Yajure Hostel.
We spent 5 days just taking it easy in San Juan del Sur and going to the beach and reading and chilling by the pool. It is a great place to stay to take some time out from the travelling. I got through the Barack Obama book Dreams from my father, highly recommendable. He wrote it before he was elected president and talks about his roots and growing up mixed race in the USA. Very interesting. One day we went to a beautiful beach called Majagual, we would have liked to explore more of the beaches around but since you had to take a 4x4 to get to them and each time it cost 5usd we spent most of the time at the pool. Another day we paid 5usd and spent the day at the Pelican Eyes resort in town. They have an amazing pool area and hammocks, for 5usd they let you use the pool and pool area for the day and als give you a cocktail. The next stop after San Juan del Sur was going to be Ometepe, we got a taxi to San Jorge to take the ferry to Ometepe Island on the Friday morning.
