Yesterday verity and I decided to venture to a place known at the farmstay simply as 'the pub with cold beer'. Although this excursion is usually recommended as a good bike ride, we decided instead to brave it on foot! It took us a good two hours to get there and often we felt we were in the middle of nowhere- in many places the roads are just sandy tracks and you can go a good distance without coming across a single person or vehicle. The pub (a small shack with a large brood of chickens) served a limited amount of food (primarily chicken) but also provided the inside ring of tractor wheels for floating or 'tubing' gently along the river- exactly what we needed after a long walk in the heat although we did have a close encounter with a water buffalo.

Then last night we took the sleeper train to Hanoi. This was a much more pleasurable experience than the one in India and we both slept pretty well. Hanoi seems like a really nice city and has a great deal more character than Ho Chi Minh. Despite its large size it has a laid-back vibe and the streets are narrow and old. Tomorrow we have booked a tour to do a one night stay on a boat in Halong Bay- one of Vietnams most touristy hotspots but listed as a UNESCO world heritage sight and supposedly very beautiful before returning to explore Hanoi properly.
