Despite being a big city with roads swarming with motorcycles, we were pleased to discover that HCMC still has plenty of character and charm. Our last day with our tour group was spent visiting the famous Cu Chi Tunnels and the Vietnam War Museum. The tunnels were fascinating, they are so tiny and cramped that's it's hard to imagine the Viet Cong people scuttling along with such ease and speed when escaping American attacks. Our guide for the day was fantastic- a war veteran with impeccable English which he had acquired when fighting alongside the Americans for the Southern Vietnamese Army. He was a great character and had plenty of stories to tell. The visit to the war museum was surprising- more like a photo gallery than a display of boring artefacts. It showed the shocking devastation caused by the Americans during the war especially through their highly condemned use of Napalm and Agent Orange. Three generations on and deformities in children are still being linked to its effects. Although being an extremely biased portrayal of the war and its consequences it was nevertheless interesting to contrast it with the side our guide had represented at the tunnels.

Saying goodbye to our group was sadder than anticipated especially knowing they will be continuing the tour together through Vietnam and Thailand whilst we branch out on our own. However in spite of how much we've enjoyed their company, i know we are both looking forward to slowing things down and continuing at our own pace.
